A superb vintage German teddy bear by Richard Diem, dating from around the 1950s and displaying all the distinctive features that have made Diem bears so highly regarded by collectors.
This beautifully proportioned bear is made from golden mohair and firmly stuffed with traditional wood wool (excelsior). He has a flat, rounded head, generous ears, large feet and a wonderfully expressive face. The muzzle and paw pads are inset with shorter mohair, and his nose and mouth are neatly embroidered in black wool yarn. Pale back-painted glass eyes give him a gentle, alert expression.
All five disc joints move smoothly, and his original growler is still working, adding to both charm and collectability. A classic example of post-war German teddy bear production from Sonneberg, the historic heart of European toy making.

Background
Richard Diem founded his teddy bear manufactory in 1896 in Sonneberg, Thuringia, then the centre of European bear production. The company reached its height in the 1920s and 1930s. After Richard Diem’s death in 1938 and his son Arno’s death in 1946, the business was continued by his daughter-in-law Liese Lotte until 1976, when the GDR regime closed the company. Diem bears remain highly collectible today for their quality, character and distinctive design.
